Communications Director (Remote Possible)

Our Communications Director works closely with our team at the state level and nationally to advance strategic issue campaigns and lift up grassroots voices to address the root causes of environmental injustice and harm to human health and the planet from toxic chemicals and plastic pollution.

The Communications Director must be a strong digital strategist, content creator, and social and earned media manager. To meet our goals for organizational marketing, fund development, and program success, the Communications Director plans, manages, and executes communications strategies and projects, with a strong concentration on digital communications and media and influencer relations. As the leader of a one-person communications shop among a staff of ten, the Communications Director must plan the growth and help expand our communications capacity over time.

The Communications Director reports to the Director of Advancement, and coordinates closely with other staff, board leaders, and strategic partners.

Major Responsibilities

Content Creation – Write, edit, and repurpose, for various on- and off-line channels, creative content including evocative mission-related stories, accompanied by attention-getting data and the latest news about opportunities for action.

Digital Strategy – Develop, implement and evaluate the results of various digital approaches to advancing our program goals and marketing and fundraising objectives. Write content and manage digital fund appeals and action alerts, evaluating and reporting results in coordination with relevant staff teams.

Management – Plan and direct communications projects across the organization, including developing, analyzing and managing project goals, timelines, budgets, staff roles and responsibilities, and opportunities for collaboration. Effectively manage contractors and interns, and be prepared to manage direct reports.

Leadership – Develop and advance a vision and plans for growing the capacity of the communications department in coordination with management. Develop an intern program, recruiting and managing communications interns on an ongoing basis. Develop and maintain strong working relationship with relevant funders, donors, board members, strategic partners, media personnel, and others.

Specific Duties

Program Communications

  • Work with campaign and project teams to create strategic communications strategies, timelines, and tools.
  • Frame issues and develop compelling messages.
  • Edit and help draft reports, fact sheets, issue briefs, and other materials.
  • Coordinate with vendors on design, production, and distribution of materials.
  • Provide communications support for organizing, educational outreach, and canvassing.

Digital Communication

  • Maintain websites by regularly enhancing and updating content and graphic appeal to maximize their performance as the organization’s most robust content hubs.
  • Manage organization-wide engagement on social media platforms, primarily Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Coordinate development and distribution of online newsletters, event announcements, action alerts, and fundraising appeals, and regularly analyze and report metrics.
  • Ensure that websites, social media, and e-mail marketing move constituents to take action—online, by phone, through media outlets, and in-person—that boosts campaigns and fund development.
  • Maintain organization’s digital photo library, and coordinate needs for photography and videography.

Media Relations

  • Write news releases, advisories, and media statements.
  • Cultivate relationships with bloggers, reporters, editors, columnists, and social media influencers, and maintain a current media list within our organizational database and track contacts.
  • Pitch breaking news, features stories, and editorials, and help draft and place opinion editorials, letters to the editor, and online comments. Monitor media to flag opportunities for response or to advance program messages.
  • Plan and staff news conferences and other media events, with supporting materials, and prep staff and volunteers as media speakers.
  • Collect and distribute to staff, board, donors, partners, and other constituencies news links that feature our work or are otherwise relevant.

Management and Leadership

  • Develop communications project plans and budgets.
  • Recruit and manage contractors and interns.
  • Develop a communications intern program, and recruit and manage interns.
  • Work with management to develop a vision, plans and funding requests to grow the capacity of the communications department over time.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key people inside and outside the organization.
  • Work to continuously improve the communications performance of the organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years professional experience creating content for advocacy, marketing, or fund development; with responsibility for website, social media and digital communication
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a talent for persuasive communications and message marketing. Strong proofreading ability, with experience editing content for grammar, punctuation, style, and flow
  • Proficiency in website management and editing using WordPress
  • Proficiency in message marketing through social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Experience with e-mail marketing and constituent relationship management systems.
  • Understanding of grassroots and direct advocacy—and how digital communications technologies can help achieve advocacy objectives
  • Demonstrated capacity to collect and tell the stories of grassroots stories
  • Intercultural competency—the ability to communicate to diverse audiences appropriately and effectively
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google systems.
  • Organized, detail oriented, and oriented to meeting deadlines
  • Team player, with a sense of humor

Preferred Qualifications – Additional consideration will be given to candidates with:

  • Knowledge of basic server management and HTML coding
  • Photo- and video-production and editing skills
  • Spanish language fluency, including speaking and writing

In a state known as “vacationland,” you’ll find hiking, biking, skiing, boating, and beautiful beaches are all close by. It’s your choice.

Salary: Upper 50s to Mid-60s, adjusted for experience over the minimum requirements and with some adjustment possible for those located in more expensive locations.
