National Campaigns Manager - National Audubon Society - Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the National Campaigns Director, the National Campaigns Manager is responsible for ensuring the issue campaigns we run build political power and advance the National Audubon Society’s conservation priorities. As part of the National Policy team, this person will spearhead the coordination of a multidisciplinary team to plan and execute Audubon’s state and/or federal policy campaigns. They will also work closely with state offices and local chapters to carry out grassroots and grasstops campaigns. The successful candidate will have a background in campaign development and execution, strategic thinking, issue campaigns and familiarity with state and federal legislative processes.

Essential Functions:

This role will focus on shaping and advancing grassroots and grasstops climate campaigns at the local, state and/or federal levels depending on the issue. The Campaign Manager will support and advise on campaigns across the country and in Washington, D.C. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Working with our policy, conservation and our grassroots leaders across the network to define specific campaigns that help Audubon achieve its climate policy and capacity-building goals;
  • Working closely with in-state campaign staff and/or serving as campaign lead on federal issues. Building strategic grassroots/grasstops campaign plans that reflect Audubon’s approach and articulate both the overall strategy, as well as the tactics and timeline needed to win;
  • Overseeing and coordinating campaigns across the country and across the organization to effectively leverage Audubon assets and resources. Campaign managers will be responsible for coordinating appropriate teams at   Audubon, including communications and marketing, network and other offices as needed;
  • Helping manage consultants such as lobbyists, issue experts, or communications professionals when needed;
  • Providing and/or identifying best grassroots organizing practices to implement across the network and train new members to do this type of work;
  • Tracking and monitoring campaigns. Providing regular updates to leadership on campaign progress and outputs, such as letters to the editor, outreach activities, in-district meetings, etc;
  • Supporting fundraising. Campaign staff will work with the fundraising, policy and conservation leadership to identify and help support campaign fundraising efforts;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of related professional experience in grassroots advocacy, specifically on-the-ground or field experience. At least 3-5 years managing staff and overseeing teams;
  • Experience running grassroots issue campaigns at the local, state, or federal level—including strategy development, field execution tactics such as signature gathering, running phone banks, training volunteers and creating   engagement plans for priority targets;
  • Must have exceptional leadership skills with the proven ability to oversee and mentor staff while working effectively in a team-based environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to build consensus among a wide range of individuals. Must be comfortable with public speaking;
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple complex or multifaceted projects through to success, including meeting financial goals and project deadlines;
  • A self-starter who is motivated and able to work in a decentralized work environment with minimal supervision;
  • Thorough understanding of advocacy, communications and grassroots engagement;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, judgment and a demonstrated ability to collaborate and build coalitions;
  • Willingness to travel out-of-state, and the ability and enthusiasm to work evenings and weekends as job responsibilities demand;
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation and commitment to the mission of the National Audubon Society
